Shell Rummel Interview for the Sit & Sew Podcast

I was so honored when Stephanie Soebbing, owner of Quilt Addicts Anonymous, asked if she could interview me for her engaging Podcast, Sit & Sew. We sat down recently to chat and I shared my experiences as an artist and designer. We talk about the evolution of my career, art licensing, my design inspiration, my creative process and more:)  Stephanie asked great questions and our conversation covered the span of many years and a lot of territory that I hope you'll find insightful and interesting. So, grab a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy a listen.

Stephanie and I have collaborated on a couple of quilting projects that will come to light this year. Additionally, she used two of my fabric lines, Soft Repose and Quiet Moments, to create beautiful quilts that will be featured in her upcoming book, "Simple Quilts for the Modern Home". The book will debut later this year so if you are interested in grabbing a copy, sign up for her newsletter so you are on the list! She has a thriving quilt store in Illinois and a very established blog and podcast which is a resource for quilters of all skill levels, providing daily articles featuring tutorials, original patterns and quilting news. Visit her website, Quilt Addicts Anonymous to see more:)

Flat Lay Obsession underway, which means anything and everything is fair game. I've torn apart my studio grabbing swatches and products off the shelves in my efforts to show mix and matchability;)  I can tell you that it is completely gratifying, seeing so many of the products we have designed, working so well together, telling a cohesive story with palette and line and vibe. It's a culmination of intention, focus, persistence and patience... the method to my madness;)

Interior Designers...we would love to work with you! Apply to receive Trade discounts on our product lines. Our current Studio Collection includes casual luxe Belgian linen fabrics, pillows and beautifully crafted wallpapers. We also offer a full range of wool rugs and silk pillows through our industry partner, Surya, as well as a line of Interior House paint in my signature color palettes!

Natural Affinity Rugs, Artisan Made, In stock!

A special delivery arrived last week from our fabulous design partner, Surya. This is our Natural Affinity Rug (NTA-1000) and I just feel compelled to share it again and again with all of you because... well, let's face it, the pics online via Surya simply Do NOT do this collection justice. So, I am taking it upon myself to show the rugs in a visually more compelling way...How am I doing?;)

Each rug in my designer collection is artisan made in India, which means every rug is truly a hand made work of art. The wool is very soft...feels so good underfoot. The colors have a shimmery softness that changes in the light. A beautiful product line and one I am very proud of.

I carry the entire Natural Affinity wool rug and silk pillow range in my Shop. These products are also available to the trade, so if you are an Interior Designer, reach out to me and let's work together.

Beautiful Soft Repose Quilt featured on Etsy

I occasionally come upon some really beautiful quilts that feature my fabrics. I am always in awe... such talent in the quilting community and I consider them among my most enthusiastic fans!

So, here's a beauty that caught my eye! Featured over on the MagnoliaQuilts Etsy shop... a gorgeous handmade quilt that utilizes quilting fabric from Soft Repose, my first collection with Freespirit fabrics/ Coats. This collection lends itself to more contemporary quilt concepts and this one showcases that to spectacular effect!

Check it out in the MagnoliaQuilts Etsy store... only one left;)

Fall Quilt Market Recap

When you arrive, your booth looks something like this;)

A bit of a waiting game...

IMG_5351.JPG

But when the walls are up, the carpet unrolled, the lights working and the samples unpacked and styled, it's pretty fantastic:) Months of hard work to fulfill a vision, realized. Just as it was for last year's quilt market when we launched Soft Repose, our booth continued to be a haven of calm and tranquility. A lighter, softer, gentler touch overall... which is in keeping with the design aesthetic of the Shell Rummel brand

We launched Bloom Beautiful, a rose garden inspired collection that features the prettiest design elements, like roses in bloom, song birds, branches and willows, all in my hand painted watercolor style.  It's a very relatable collection of patterns that mix beautifully with our Quiet Moments collection from last spring... and yes, that's intentional;)  I want my stores to get the most longevity they can out of a collection, so we layer colors and patterns in a way that allows each new collection to build on the one that came before it.

Integral to the success of our booth at Quilt Market, are the talented creatives who create for us! The details are what make our projects stand out and this year we rocked it. Gratitude, to all who sewed for me, @quiltaddictsanonymous, @sugar_bowl_crafts, @tooheycohen, @bwestquilts, @quiltedcardinal .... (you can follow them all on Instagram). Your work is lovely and you made me look real good:) x

Of course,  time at a trade show is always measured best by the company you keep.  We were fortunate to have spectacular neighbors, Tim Holtz and his lovable team, as well as visits from some fellow designers. Always grateful for the generous spirit of those we share time with.

A joy to have Rachel working with me for nearly 10 years and counting! She worked so hard to help bring our booth to life and really, she's the coolest, so I couldn't deny her a design field trip to the Museum of Fine Art Houston to see the Oscar de la Renta exhibition... a highlight of our time in Houston.

I am amazed at the kindness of the quilting/sewing community! So many shop owners and fabric lovers from all over the globe came by to admire our booth and the lovely projects we featured.  We welcomed the company... they truly are the nicest people you'll ever meet. It's an honor when a store owner/buyer chooses to bring your products into their store and offer it to their customers and we take great pride in knowing that our collections are gaining a following both here and overseas.

Bloom Beautiful is in pre order now and ships in May.

The collection is available via Freespirit fabrics.

Feature Article in dpi Magazine Taiwan

Shell Rummel|海的律動 | The Rhythm of the Sea

I recently received my copy of dpi Magazine Taiwan (Vol. 217), which honored me by running a lovely feature article on my work along with a short Q & A. Happy to share a few images from my eight page spread as well as several passages from our interview. Warm thanks to the editorial team of dpi Magazine for including me in this beautiful, professional and high quality publication! x

Q: Would you share yourself with us?

A: I’m Shell Rummel, an artist and designer whose art and design studio is located just outside of Washington DC.  I have an extensive fine art portfolio, having worked as a professional artist for nearly 20 years. Watercolors are my chosen medium and the unpredictable quality of painting with water suits my love of fluid, organic shape and line. I often detail my works with ink to add intricacy and depth and this has become a signature style for my work.  I have a passion for textiles arts and as a designer, I am proud that through licensing my art, my designs and patterning can be found gracing a large variety of home décor products such as rugs, pillows, bath and bath and textiles, via the Shell Rummel brand.

Q: Your paintings are full of organic lines and layers of color. You’ve said that your inspiration is all things from the natural world.  Where do you get the inspiration the most, sea, shell, tree or something else?

A:  Inspiration for a painting comes from many unexpected places but more often than not, there is a connection to elements found in nature. It’s no surprise that I am drawn to the water, specifically the ocean, and often pay homage to it via my paintings and design work. I paint what I feel more so than what I see…and nowhere is this more evident than in my modern coastal inspired artwork which tends to abstract natural elements into line, pattern and shape. The things that most often catch my eye? Many a seashell, oyster, tideline, variegated rock and seagrass have inspired my work…I try to pay tribute to the details of their distinctive organic shapes.

Q: It seems you like all kinds of blue and green colors a lot! Why do you like these colors? How do these colors make you feel?

A:  My go-to color palette includes watery blues and greens offset by neutral greys and browns. There is a grounded calmness to this combination of colors that I find very soothing and of course, reminds of the ocean I love so much.

Q&A with Shell...

I was interviewed by the fabulous CylCollective women's group that I joined early this year for a quick Q&A over on their blog. Click the picture above to read my words that were shared with my CYL squad.

Love this group! The women inspire me everyday with their creativity and their voices. Most are considerably younger than me, but I find their confidence and openness  to be so inspiring. They are strong, empathetic, kind, helpful and giving... women helping women...Woman, at her best.

For all of the women creatives who are following me on this journey, I invite you to join this group and see for yourself how finding a tribe can push you further, within and out of your own comfort zones. Member enrollment opens up again next month so follow @cylcollective on Instagram and keep eyes open for the new membership dates...feel free to mention that I sent you! I'll be posting about membership again as it gets closer.

The Handmade Pop-Up is LIVE!

This year, one of my personal goals was to be more active within the different communities of artists that I follow. I tend to be quite comfortable in my cocoon of quiet but I recognize the value that comes with feeling a part of something bigger. There is energy in community, and particularly when it comes to artists, that energy is inspiring. So this spring, I leapt out towards the edge and applied to be a vendor at the Handmade Pop-up,  an Online sale which features fine artwork and hand crafted goods (ceramics, jewelry, fiber arts...) from 200+ artists, artisans, designers and creatives all around the globe.

I am offering 5 watercolor and Ink paintings;  2 figurative illustrations which have been part of my personal portfolio and are quite special to me, 1 abstract land/sea scape which is unique because it's a little different than my usual palette... and 2 brand new paintings that I created specifically in honor of this event.  My pricing is reflective of the spirit of a Pop-Up shop... I really wanted my work to be attainable to those who would like to add it to their private collections.  I'm thrilled to be a part of this community and grateful for the support of women entrepreneurs that support and encourage each others creative selves to flourish.

The Pop-Up went live today, so visit www.thehandmadepopup.com and see what catches your eye...If not my art, then surely the work of others will inspire:)  Please share this post along to your friends and family. Follow me on Instagram and Facebook as I'll share some of my favorites there, as well. Thank you, for shopping small and "local" and for supporting women owned businesses and the arts!  ~ Shell

NY Market Week

Made it up to NYC for Market Week which always yields some lovely showroom photos. Popular Bath had a beautiful display of our collections, front and center in their showroom. Great to see it all together and hear the favorable reviews by the buying teams. Kohl's currently offers the entire collection and additional retailers are coming soon!  I was able to preview the next batch of designs which are still in production, but there are some nice, earthy neutrals, soon to be added to the mix.  Our studio has also designed some new concepts featuring bolder pops of color, modern coastal elements, eye catching geometrics and of course, our signature tranquil patterning.

You can view all my photos from Market Week over on my Instagram feed:)

Process: How Our Rugs are Made...

I am so proud to work with Surya on my wool rugs and silk pillow collections. Not only are the final products absolutely gorgeous but even more than that, this is a company that is giving back to the beautiful people who all give so much of themselves to create our products.

This video of the process of how our rugs are made is fascinating to watch...  I am humbled by the process and grateful to those skilled artisans whose artistry, time and energy goes into the making of my collections.

Enjoy!

Soon to grace our design studio... Microbatch Textiles!

I spent the earliest days of my career self producing a variety of product lines. All of my products began with my hand painted watercolor paintings.  From there, artwork was digitized, color palettes were refined, designs tweaked,  production techniques explored and packaging created to delight.  It was so much work,  ensuring that my artistic vision was fully realized every step of the way. And as I write these words, I recall just how much I loved it all...There's something about the process of creation from beginning to end that is deeply satisfying.

In more recent years, I have been licensing my art and designs to manufacturing partners who then use my art to enhance their product lines. The collaborating happens between me, my team and the manufacturer and their art director.  Licensing also has elements that are richly rewarding, especially when our vision comes to life with a quality product, and I am fortunate to have many.

But I've been missing a more hands on approach. So my design team and I have jumped back in and we are about to offer our first collection of self produced, upholstery weight textiles on the most beautiful cotton/linen blend fabric. And, just as I remember, it really is a process;) We are still tweaking to get color perfect, but it's coming along beautifully. We are so excited to soon share the full collection, which features our softly sophisticated, organic designs along with a few other product line surprises.  This collection will be offered to the trade via Interior Design Professionals and Showrooms and we simply can't wait to see what new opportunities may arise.  I'm feeling inspired anew... it's really limitless, where we can take this!  (upholstered furniture, anyone? :)

If you're a Design Professional or an Interior Design Showroom who would like more information about the new collection, (or, if you just plain dig what we're offering:) drop me a line and let me know how you envision us working together.

The Heart Surges - A Review, by Artist /Writer, C.J. Shane

Back in 2012.... artist and accomplished writer, C.J. Shane posted a review of my ink and watercolor painting, The Heart Surges. It's always a bit surreal/fascinating when someone looks deeper into my work and then offers their unique perspective. I love what Shane wrote...she understood the essence of my art which begins with my own layered approach to storytelling. It's years later now, and I have come upon her words again. I'm still honored by what she wrote and I invite you to read her review (below my painting post) and offer your own interpretation of The Heart Surges, if so inclined.

The Heart Surges - original watercolor by Shell Rummel shellrummel.com

"Even now, all possible feelings do not yet exist, there are still those that lie beyond our capacity and our imagination. From time to time, when a piece of music no one has ever written or a painting no one has ever painted, or something else impossible to predict, fathom or yet describe takes place, a new feeling enters the world. And then, for the millionth time in the history of feeling, the heart surges and absorbs the impact." ~ Nicole Krauss, The History of Love

Shell Rummel
Saturday Art Review by C. J. Shane

Some artists present us with images that can bring forth different stories in our minds. These images tell a tale that instruct or inform us. It’s impossible to miss the story in Picasso’s Guernica, for example. Or perhaps an image carries within it a spontaneous story laden with diverse ideas or emotions – ideas and emotions that are very often related to what we are thinking or feeling in our personal lives.

Other artists have the capacity to go beyond concept or emotions in storytelling, and instead they present images that can be seen, interpreted, or read in many different ways not bounded by one story line.  In these works, the essential nature or structure of the image can be read in different ways. It’s up to you and me to say what we are seeing. The image can be seen as micro or macro level, as a landscape in one minute, or a figure in the next; as abstracts now, or an  impressionistic rendering in a future viewing. These multiple understandings of a single image are especially intriguing to me

Shell Rummel is one of those artists who can provide us with those compelling images. In fact she says herself, “The fluid grace of nature and its infinite interpretations is my inspiration.” The word “fluid” catches my attention here because it seems to encapsulate the character of her work. The very ability of her images to be read in different ways manifests this idea of fluidity.

Take this watercolor painting, The Heart Surges which is accompanied by a passage from the book The History of Love.  From the title of this work and the book passage, an immediate interpretation comes to us. We imagine a “new feeling” entering the world, and we get to speculate on what the new feeling might be based on the image we see.

But there are other ways to read this. Are we looking at the interior space of a creature that carries within itself a heart and blood vessels and surging flood flows?  That micro-level interpretation of the inner life of cells or structure of tissue appears often in Shell’s work. Or stepping back a bit, do we see a reposing figure with pulsating vessels just beneath the skin’s surface? Or perhaps this is something entirely different. Perhaps it’s a sea creature with tentacles floating on undulating waves. Step back again.  Could the image be an island floating in the great ocean? We see rocky cliffs and sandy shores, tree lines and open grass prairies, trails and roads and little villages?  Or perhaps this is the great Ocean itself with that pulsating, surging life-giving substance that gives planet Earth its true name, the Water Planet.

One can always be sure that Shell’s images will be organic, made of earth and sea and sky, of tissues and cells and atoms that make up the things of life. Her color palette is distinctive and perfectly supports her artistic message. Although I know much of her time is taken with her design business based in Virginia, I am always very pleased to see her artwork appear in her G+ stream. It has become something of an entertaining puzzle for me to see how many layers of reality I can see in her paintings.

Something New

Time this week, to begin working on some of the creative projects that have been on my list for a while. Ink is cool, because it flows as it wishes. It's a lot like watercolor...maybe more headstrong, though. I did spend a good deal of time trying to manage it but eventually gave up on that and enjoyed the unruly flow. Ink is messy by nature. I am still finding splatters of indigo and moss.

And while I'm here, let's talk about this palette. I only had three ink colors in hand which meant I had to work with what I had...which felt surprisingly ok. Yes, my eye generally prefers my ocean colors but these, in their own way, still feel soft to me... just in a different way. I like the monotone melding where the overlaps occur amidst swirls of ink. I really like the organic shapes, lines and edges. I love that it was something new.

More work/play to be done, I think.

"Soft Repose" Launch...Thoughts on Fall Quilt Market 2016

So thrilled to have exhibited for the first time at International Quilt Market! I was truly humbled by the love and also surprised and honored by how many kind and enthusiastic customers from the US and abroad, actually sought us out, just to say, " I bought your entire Soft Repose line for my store!" ...Wow!  What a feeling.

Shell Rummel Soft Repose Quilt Market 2

The Shell Rummel booth came together beautifully and really was a haven of calm tranquility, a place to catch your breath amidst the sea of rainbow bright fabrics that are so prevalent at Quilt Market.  I like that the serene feel of my Soft Repose patterning resonated so strongly with so many and that my booth ambience truly lived up to the collection's name.  Soft, quiet palettes can speak volumes, too.

Shell Rummel Soft Repose Quilt Market 1

The Coats and Freespirit crafters and sewers created some really spectacular product samples to showcase the Soft Repose Line. As you can see, the patterning (with names like: Infinite Beauty, Raindrop, Tranquility, Steel Magnolia, Touchstone and our signature pattern, Pebble) really lends itself well to softly sophisticated home decor and accessory projects. It's a natural fit for pillows, poufs, modern quilts and personal accessories!

Over the course of three days we met some of the loveliest people... Buyers from Independent fabric stores all over the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Japan and Korea... and on and on.  Their enthusiasm was truly awe inspiring!  My heart is full.

Special thanks to Lisa Kaupp from Design in Motion Quilt Studio in GA, who hand crafted several of the pillows, tote bags and accessory items specifically for our booth from our designs. These samples are so fantastic because they give our customers a visual idea of what they can create with our Soft Repose fabrics! So much possibility...

A big hug of gratitude for my Senior Designer, Rachel who has worked with me in my studio for nearly 9 years, and counting. She plays a big role in every product my studio offers, (and, in addition to our fabric by the yard collections, we offer: rugs, pillows, bedding and bath textiles, house paint, paper craft products, wall art,  invitations and even Judaica) and was a tremendous asset on this trip!  I know she enjoyed her time in Houston just as much as I did as well as having an opportunity to interact directly with our customers,  She can now also add "videographer" to her growing list of talents;)

Shell Rummel Quilt Market 3

Every product the Shell Rummel studio creates begins with my original, watercolor paintings. There is something uniquely beautiful when you can see the artist's hand in a finished product... That artistry is what makes my collections special.  Warmest thanks to Westminster Fibers for seeing the value in an artist designed collection and allowing Shell Rummel a beautiful showcase for our Soft Repose fabrics at Quilt Market! It was a true honor to be a part of it all ~

We'll be offering more of our beautiful products as Giveaway items over on our Instagram and Facebook pages, so don't miss out:)

Shell's Pasta and Red Clam Sauce

Preparing the clams:

A few things about fresh clams I learned along the way... Preferably, cook clams the same day you buy them. Do not store them inside the plastic bag from the supermarket the day you buy them thinking you will cook them 2 days later... or you will suffocate them...like I did the first time;) So, buy your clams same day and when ready to cook, rinse them well in cold water. In a large mixing bowl, make a brine by adding 1/3 cup of NON IODIZED salt  ( iodine will kill your fresh clams...) to a gallon of cold water...stir and add clams and let them soak for 20 minutes or so...this helps them release any sand/grit that they might have inside their shells. Rinse well under cold running water, toss any clams that have cracked shells and clean any shells that may have debris attached. Then, set aside while you begin cooking the sauce.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup of Extra virgin olive oil
2 large onions, finely diced
Button mushrooms, thick sliced
6 garlic cloves, finely diced
1 small jalapeno pepper, seeded and minced ( or, you can substitute red pepper flakes)
I large can of diced tomatoes
2 cups dry white wine
3/4 cup of water
2 bay leaves
Seafood: 1 big bag of fresh clams
1 big piece of white fish (I used cod but tilapia would be nice) cut into 1-inch chunks
fresh basil, fresh italian parsley chopped well
salt and pepper to taste
lemon

Pasta of your choice...I like orecchiette with this dish because they are like little scoops that catch the broth really nicely... much easier to eat than spaghetti.

Cooking:

Boil water to cook pasta of your choice. Heavily salt the water once it comes to a rolling boil.

On Medium high heat, heat olive oil in a large pot.  Add the onion and mushrooms and cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring frequently. Add garlic and jalapeno pepper and cook 5 minutes, stirring frequently so the garlic does not burn.  Add the wine and cook for another 3-4 minutes. You want it bubbling so the alcohol boils out a bit.

Turn the heat down... then add in the can of tomatoes, water, bay leaves, salt and pepper to taste... simmer over medium low heat for 15 minutes.

Turn the heat back up to medium high and add the fish...cook 3-4 minutes. It will flake nicely into the sauce as it cooks.  Add in the clams, cover the pot and cook for another 5-8 minutes. Stir once or twice. The clams will begin to open up as they cook. Cooking time is dependent on the type of clams you are using, but generally, when most have popped open wide, it's done. You don't want to overcook clams or they will get rubbery.  Discard any clam whose shell has not opened as that means the clam inside was probably not happy and healthy from the start.

Plating (Make it pretty, people...)

Use a bowl as this is a brothy meal. Layer Orecchiette pasta into bottom of bowl. Spoon red sauce and clams over the pasta. Sprinkle with fresh basil and fresh Italian parsley. Add a light squeeze of lemon. Garnish with nice crusty french bread... I like to brush the bread with olive oil, a little dusting of garlic powder and fresh parmesan cheese...broil until golden brown.

Enjoy! And Let me know what you think:)
